A family reading challenge you can start tonight

A parent can start a family reading challenge on Read Rocket by adding a child and logging the book in their hands. The title is required. Pages and minutes tonight are optional. A simple family goal is created in the background. You do not have to pick chapters, a prize, or a school code before the first log.

What the first night looks like

  1. Create a parent account and add your child's name and grade.
  2. On the home screen, choose Log a book. Type the title. Add pages if you know them.
  3. Save. The home screen becomes that child's reading log, with a Log tonight button.
  4. The next night, log more pages. The page count moves even if the book is not finished.
  5. When the book is done, mark it finished. Add a prize later if you want one.

A two-week example

A parent and a second grader are reading a chapter book before bed. Night one: they log the title and 8 pages. Night two: they update the log to 15 pages. The home screen shows those pages. They have not chosen a prize yet. In week two they set a goal of two books and a prize of picking Friday's dinner. The school code, if there is one, can be added when the teacher sends it. Logging does not wait on that code.

School programs and family programs

A family goal is yours. A class or library program uses the teacher's or sponsor's code. On those programs, a book has to be started and then finished. You cannot enter a stack of books you already read in order to reach their prize faster. Your own family prize can follow the rules you set at home.

Reminder emails point at the log button and name the child and the open book. They do not ask you to build a whole program first.
