A free reading log for teachers

Read Rocket is a free reading log for a classroom. You create a class, share a join code, and each finished book comes back with a written recap or a voice recording you can check from the roster. You do not pay per student, and you do not need a quiz subscription.

What the log records

A student starts the book they are actually reading. They can log pages on a school night so the roster shows movement before the book is done. When they finish, they submit a mission log: a few sentences about the book, or a short voice recording. You open that student on the class roster, read or play the log, and verify it. Verified books count toward the class book goal.

The log is not a comprehension quiz. If your school requires a scored quiz on every title, this will not replace that system. It replaces the paper log, the email chain, and the honor-system sticker chart.

Set it up this week

1. Create a free teacher account at readrocket.org and add a class. The class gets a join code.
2. Put the code on the board and in the family email. Students and parents join with that code.
3. Set a book goal and one prize you can actually hand out, such as extra recess, a certificate, or a class vote.
4. Ask students to start the book in their hands tonight and log the pages they read. They should not wait for a total page count or a chapter list.
5. When a book is finished, open the roster, read the recap or play the recording, and verify the log.
6. Mark the prize delivered when a student hits the book goal.

A concrete class example

A second-grade teacher sets a goal of five books between October and December. The prize is a homework pass. Students join with the code on Monday. On Tuesday night a student logs 12 pages of a chapter book. The roster shows those pages. Two weeks later the student submits a voice recap. The teacher plays it, verifies the book, and the star chart moves. Parents cannot mark an old book finished just to reach the prize faster on a class program. The book has to be started, then finished.
